What is the GREENGUARD Gold Certification?

We know you’re conscious about what you bring into your home, and so are we. The GREENGUARD Gold Certification means our furniture meets strict standards for low chemical emissions. It tests for over 10,000 chemicals to ensure cleaner indoor air quality. This helps ensure the air you breathe indoors is cleaner and healthier. Whether you're setting up your first apartment or upgrading your space, choosing furniture that supports better air quality just makes sense.

4 Benefits of GREENGUARD Gold Certified Furniture

At Plank+Beam, we care about creating spaces that are safe and healthy for you, your family, and your friends. And we know you do, too. When you choose Plank+Beam, you’re not just getting furniture. You’re getting peace of mind, a cleaner home, and a healthier future. And that’s something we can all feel good about.

We understand that life gets busy, and you shouldn’t have to stress about what’s in your furniture. With GREENGUARD Gold, you can trust that we design our products with your health in mind. It’s one less thing to worry about, so you can focus on what really matters.

Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of GREENGUARD Gold Certified furniture.

1. Better Indoor Air Quality

GREENGUARD Gold Certified furniture is tested to meet some of the strictest standards for chemical emissions, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This means cleaner air in your home, which can reduce common issues like headaches, allergies, or respiratory concerns.

2. Safe for the Most Vulnerable

The GREENGUARD Gold certification goes beyond standard testing to ensure products are safe for sensitive groups, including children and the elderly. That’s why it’s a top choice for schools, nurseries, and healthcare settings where safety is non-negotiable.

3. A Win for Sustainable Living

If you’re focused on creating a greener home, this certification helps you get there. GREENGUARD Gold Certified furniture can contribute to eco-friendly building programs like LEED, helping you design spaces that are both stylish and sustainable.

4. Rigorous Testing You Can Trust

Earning this certification isn’t easy—it requires passing tests for over 10,000 chemicals. This gives you peace of mind knowing your furniture meets rigorous health and safety standards.

Choosing GREENGUARD Gold Certified furniture is an investment in your family’s well-being and a more sustainable future. It’s one small change that makes a big difference—both for your home and the planet.

FAQs

What is the GREENGUARD Gold certification process like?

Key aspects of the GREENGUARD Gold certification process include:

  1. Emission testing: Products are subjected to a series of tests that measure their emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under simulated real-world conditions, including temperature and humidity.1

  2. Environmental chambers: Products are placed in dynamic environmental chambers for one to two weeks. These are temperature and humidity-controlled stainless steel compartments that ensure no external VOCs interfere with the testing.2

  3. Comprehensive chemical analysis: The certification tests for over 10,000 chemicals and VOCs, with stricter emission limits compared to standard GREENGUARD certification.1,3

  4. Specific standards: Products must meet a total VOC emission rate of 220 μg/m³, which is more stringent than the standard GREENGUARD certification limit of 500 μg/m³.3

  5. California compliance: GREENGUARD Gold certified products must also comply with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method for VOC emissions testing.4

  6. Annual recertification: Once certified, products undergo routine testing and annual recertification to ensure continued compliance with the standards.4,5

I noticed some products on the site aren’t certified yet. Why is that?

Our beds were just the first products on our site to receive this certification. Our products are being meticulously tested with an end goal of having every Plank+Beam product certified by 2027.
